Mosman Chiropractor Tips: How To Minimise The Impact Of Wearing High Heeled Shoes youtube/watch?v=X7ykrZJa8Vw Women wear high heels because it makes their legs look longer and sleeker. Some say it enhances their confidence, accentuates their legs and make them look thinner. Many are still wearing them despite the scary reports and medical studies about how much high heels can negatively affect their health. Mosman Family Chiropractic understands the need of women to wear high heels. Read on as your Mosman chiropractic shares 6 easy steps to minimise the negative impact of wearing high-heeled shoes. Effects To Your Health Researchers compared two groups of women are between 20 and 50 years old. The first group was composed of women who have regularly worn 5 centimetre heels for 2 years or more. The second group was composed of women who have never worn high heels. The researchers measured the length of muscle fibres in the calf muscles of the two groups using ultrasound. They found out that the women who wore flats have longer fiber muscles. For those wearing high heels, it appears that the fibers were made shorter by putting the muscles in a shortened position on a regular basis. Because the muscles got used to it, the muscles will struggle to function normally whenever you are not wearing high heels. This will result to less production of force whenever they contract and will lead to tightening and weakening of muscles. The study also suggests that these women with shorter muscle fibres will have abnormal strain whenever they walk on flat feet. This is because their tendon is not stretching sufficiently. From a chiropractic perspective, it follows that this will have negative effects into the hips and spine because your leg mechanic is abnormal. To minimise the impact of wearing high-heeled shoes, here are some helpful tips from your Mosman chiropractor: 1. Reduce the total amount of time you wear heels. 2. Use “commuting” shoes. Reduce the time you wear heels when weight bearing / walking. 3. Getting a regular deep tissue massage of your calf and Achilles tendon will slow down the shortening of tendons. 4. Regular Chiropractic care will substantially improve the degree and rate at which the body can tolerate and adapt to unnatural stresses. 5. Reduce the height of your heels. There is an exponential increase between the height of heels and the damage done. 6. Daily calf stretching before and after using heels will take just 2 minutes. It will feel great and will minimise the effects of the heels on your tendons. Wearing high heels will make you look great but it will also cost you your own health. Above are some suggestions to make the negative impact as minimal as possible.
