To begin he used a Counterfeit-detection pen to search for the right type of paper which would mark yellow on genuine currency but brown or black on fake. He used his pen everywhere he went and discovered that toilet paper, Bibles, dictionaries and newsprint all take the yellow mark. He turned to Newsprint -- strong, and “real cheap. His counterfeit money was so good that the secret service has some of his bills framed and mounted as souvenirs. You and I would have been completely fooled. Today Satan is in the business of deceiving the entire world. God’s word says that “Satan . . .deceives the whole world” Revelation 12:9. GOD WILL POUR OUT HIS SPIRIT IN A GREAT REVIVAL Notwithstanding the widespread declension of faith and piety, there are true followers of Christ in these churches. Before the final visitation of Gods judgments upon the earth there will be among the people of the Lord such a revival of primitive godliness as has not been witnessed since apostolic times. The Spirit and power of God will be poured out upon His children. At that time many will separate themselves from those churches in which the love of this world has supplanted love for God and His word.{The Great Controversy, page 464}. BEFORE GOD POURS OUT HIS SPIRIT, HOWEVER, SATAN BRINGS HIS COUNTERFEIT REVIVAL The enemy of souls desires to hinder this work; and before the time for such a movement shall come, he will endeavor to prevent it by introducing a counterfeit. In those churches which he can bring under his deceptive power he will make it appear that Gods special blessing is poured out; there will be manifest what is thought to be great religious interest. Multitudes will exult that God is working marvelously for them, when the work is that of another spirit. Under a religious guise, Satan will seek to extend his influence over the Christian world. {The Great Controversy, page 464}. SATAN’S FALSE REVIVAL CAUSES PEOPLE TO “NEGLECT” TO STUDY AND LEARN GOD’S LAST MESSAGE FROM REVELATION 14:6-12 Wherever men NEGLECT the testimony of the BIBLE, turning away from those plain, soul-testing truths which require SELF-DENIAL and renunciation of the world, there we may be sure that Gods blessing is not bestowed. And by the rule which Christ Himself has given, Ye shall know them by their fruits (Matthew 7:16), it is evident that these movements are not the work of the Spirit of God. {The Great Controversy, page 464.2} SATAN’S FALSE REVIVAL IS “A METHOD OF FORGETTING GOD WHICH SHALL PASS AS A METHOD OF REMEMBERING HIM” “Although priding themselves on their enlightenment, they are ignorant both of the Scriptures and of the power of God. They must have some means of quieting their consciences; and they seek that which is least spiritual and humiliating. What they desire is a method of forgetting God which shall pass as a method of remembering Him. “ {The Great Controversy, page 572}. THE PROTESTANTS JOIN HANDS WITH SPIRITUALISM AND THE PAPACY Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions. While the former lays the foundation of spiritualism, the latter creates a bond of sympathy with Rome. The Protestants of the United States will be foremost in stretching their hands across the gulf to grasp the hand of spiritualism; they will reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power; and under the influence of this threefold union, this country will follow in the steps of Rome in trampling on the rights of conscience. {GC 588.1} SPIRITUALISM DECEIVES VAST NUMBERS OF PEOPLE As spiritualism more closely imitates the nominal Christianity of the day, it has greater power to deceive and ensnare. Satan himself is converted, after the modern order of things. He will appear in the character of an angel of light. Through the agency of spiritualism, miracles will be wrought, the sick will be healed, and many undeniable wonders will be performed. And as the spirits will profess faith in the Bible, and manifest respect for the institutions of the church, their work will be accepted as a manifestation of divine power. {GC 588.2} Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Jesus tells us there is only one way to heaven and He is that way.’ John 14:6. Others seek revival by telling us there are many ways such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Jesuitism but Jesus said no – the other ways are counterfeits. A LIST OF SOME OF SATANS MODERN DECEPTIONS Samuel Koranteng-Pipim writes, “Have you heard any of the following terms: Prayer labyrinth, taizé prayer, spiritual disciplines, spiritual formation, and spiritual directors? What about God-encounters, the silence, sacred spaces of meditation, contemplative prayer, centering prayer, breath prayer, and Jesus prayer?Welcome to the new age of inter-spirituality, mystical or contemplative spirituality—and its many ways of encountering God. BUDDHISM, HINDUISM, JESUITISM. The false Contemplative (centering) prayer came from Buddhism, Hinduism,! and Jesuitism. Where did the Jesuits come from? They began seventeen years after Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to Wittenburg Castle door. They were begun to destroy Protestantism. Contemplative prayer contemplates on a word - a mantra or breathing exercises (A practice that comes from Hinduism and Buddhism. It is designed to EMPTY THE MIND. Gods Contemplative prayer, on the other hand, calls for spending an hour a day contimplating the life of Christ (Desire of Ages, page 83). The True Christian Contemplation is designed to FILL THE MIND with an understanding of Christs life, with Gods promises, and His Power. Notice that Gods Word tells us that just before Jesus returns Satan . . . deceives the whole world. Revelation 12:9. SOME OF THE LEADERS AND HISTORY OF SATANS DECEPTION (1)THOMAS MERTON & HENRI NOUWEN - According to Roger Oakland, Catholic mystics Thomas Merton and Henri Nouwen brought contemplative prayer out of the convents and monasteries…to Protestant and even evangelical circles.” In his book The Way of the Heart, Henri Nouwen (1991) discusses SINGLE - WORD REPETITION PRAYER: The quiet repetition of a single word can help us to descend with the mind into the heart. Thomas Merton describes the goal of centering prayer in these terms: “At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and by illusion, a point of pure truth. . . . This little point . . . is the pure glory of God in us. . . . It is in everybody.” This is pure panthism. He wrote many books on the subject in his lifetime. One of his books sold about four million by 1984. He claimed he saw no contradiction between Christianity and Buddhism. He writes: Asia, Zen, Islam, etc. all these come together in my life. It would be madness for me to attempt to create a monastic life for myself by excluding all these. I would be less a monk. (2) FATHER THOMAS KEATING (3), ZEN BUDDHIST MASTER ROSHI SASAKI (4) FATHER WILLIAM MENINGER In the 1960’s Father Thomas Keating, the abbot of St. Josephs Abbey (3) invited the great Zen Buddhist Master Roshi Sasaki to lead retreats at the abbey. (4) His Trappist brother Father William Meninger PANTHISM (5) ERIC BUTTERWORTH, in his bestselling “inspirational classic” Discover the Power Within You: writes: This basic principle – the Divinity of Man – is the dynamism of Christianity that can save the world and lead mankind to a new level of ‘peace on earth, good will toward men.’” (6) OPRAH WINFREY spoke for many who have embraced the New Age spirituality, when she endorsed Butterworth’s book in the following words on the front cover of the paperback edition (1992) “This book changed my perspective on life and religion. Eric Butterworth teaches that God isn’t ‘up there.’ He exists inside each one of us, and it’s up to us to seek the divine within. ANSWER TO BUTTERWORTH AND OPRAH WINFREY Already there are coming in among our people spiritualistic teachings that will undermine the faith of those who give heed to them. The theory that God is an essence pervading all nature is one of Satans most subtle devices. It misrepresents God and is a dishonor to His greatness and majesty. {8T 291.1} Pantheistic theories are not sustained by the word of God. The light of His truth shows that these theories are soul-destroying agencies. Darkness is their element, sensuality their sphere. They gratify the natural heart and give license to inclination. Separation from God is the result of accepting them. {8T 291.2} Our condition through sin has become preternatural, and the power that restores us must be supernatural, else it has no value. There is but one power that can break the hold of evil from the hearts of men, and that is the power of God in Jesus Christ. Only through the blood of the Crucified One is there cleansing from sin. His grace alone can enable us to resist and subdue the tendencies of our fallen nature. This power the spiritualistic theories concerning God make of no effect. If God is an essence pervading all nature, then He dwells in all men; and in order to attain holiness, man has only to develop the power that is within him. {8T 291.3} These theories, followed to their logical conclusion, sweep away the whole Christian economy. They do away with the necessity for the atonement and make man his own savior. These theories regarding God make His word of no effect, and those who accept them are in great danger of being led finally to look upon the whole Bible as a fiction. They may regard virtue as better than vice; but God being removed from His position of sovereignty, they place their dependence upon human power, which, without God, is worthless. The unaided human will has no real power to resist and overcome evil. The defenses of the soul are broken down. Man has no barrier against sin. When once the restraints of Gods word and His Spirit are rejected, we know not to what depths one may sink. {8T 291.4} Those who continue to hold these spiritualistic theories will surely spoil their Christian experience, sever their connection with God, and lose eternal life. {8T 292.1} (7). MATTHEW FOX—a writer and Episcopalian priest, is often spoken of as being the proponent of New Age mysticism within Christianity. In The Coming of the Cosmic Christ, he wrote: “Divinity is found in all creatures. . . . The Cosmic Christ is the “I am” in every creature.” (8). MORTON KELSEY—AN EPISCOPAL PRIEST and a popular writer among certain Christian thinkers, wrote: “You can find most of the New Age practices in the depth of Christianity. . . . I believe that the Holy One lives in every soul.”14 (9). SPIRITUAL DIRECTORS INTERNATIONAL—The need to start training pastors in contemplative, New Age spirituality has been answered by the Spiritual Directors International (SDI). They offer workshops and training seminars on how to experience this new spirituality. In one national conference in 2005 titled “Exile or Return? Accompanying the Journey into Contemplative Prayer”, the following was presented: (10). SHALEM INSTITUTE (FOR SPIRITUAL FORMATION)— located in Washington DC, is considered one of the leading centers for contemplative spirituality. Founded by DR. TILDEN EDWARDS (EPISCOPAL MINISTER) and Gerald May (a psychiatrist), this center’s mission is to spread the practice of the new spirituality prayer to Christianity as a whole. Some Adventists within our ranks have trained at this institute and are teaching the practice to their fellow believers. (11). YOUTH SPECIALTIES—is a youth-oriented organization in North America. For years it has hosted an annual event called the National Pastors Convention, to which many contemplative speakers are invited. They also make available onsite to the conference attendees labyrinth, late-night contemplative prayer sessions, and workshops on yoga, “Creating Sacred Spaces,” “emerging worship,” and “God Encounters: Spiritual Exercise That Transform Students.” Tragically, some youth directors in the Seventh-day Adventist church have attended conferences by “Youth Specialties” and are modeling their youth ministry upon the practices they have learned in those places. (12) RICHARD J. FOSTER ---in 1978, RICHARD J. FOSTER published Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth, contemplative spirituality suddenly became popular within Evangelical circles. Hailed byChristianity Today as one of the ten best books of the twentieth century, this work and others by Foster, introduced to the Protestant church the medieval mystics. More than any other person, it is Richard Foster who has been at the forefront of the contemporary contemplative movement since the 1970s. THREE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS FOR THE PROMOTION OF THIS DECEPTION ARE: 1. SIGNS AND WONDERS MOVEMENT. By means of its inordinate emphasis on speaking in tongues, visions, dreams, prophecies, healings, prayer warriors, laughing in the spirit, prayer walks, and other forms of prayer offensives. 2. MEGA-CHURCHES. THE SECOND CRITICAL BRIDGE has been constructed by some well-meaning Evangelical, mega-church leaders like Rick Warren (of the “Purpose-Driven” fame) has introduced many Protestants to mystical meditation practices, such as “contemplative meditation” or “contemplative prayer.” The book Sacred Pathways, has been endorsed by Rick Warren, the author teaches readers how to practice “centering prayers.” In another endorsement Rick Warren endorses “contemplative prayer” in his positive promotion of the book, The Soul at Rest: A Journey Into Contemplative Prayer. 3. EMERGING CHURCH - A worship renewal the five senses. We should take it point by point, and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones. As we thus dwell upon His great sacrifice for us, our confidence in Him will be more constant, our love will be quickened, and we shall be more deeply imbued with His spirit. If we would be saved at last, we must learn the lesson of penitence and humiliation at the foot of the cross. {Desire of Ages, page 83}. As we associate together, we may be a blessing to one another. If we are Christs, our sweetest thoughts will be of Him. We shall love to talk of Him; and as we speak to one another of His love, our hearts will be softened by divine influences. Beholding the beauty of His character, we shall be changed into the same image from glory to glory. 2 Corinthians 3:18. {Desire of Ages, page 83}. As surely as the oak is in the acorn, so surely is the gift of God in His promise. If we receive the promise, we have the gift. Faith that enables us to receive Gods gifts is itself a gift, of which some measure is imparted to every human being. It grows as exercised in appropriating the word of God. In order to strengthen faith, we must often bring it in contact with the word. {Education, page 253} . Instead of emptying your mind, fill your mind with Gods promises and pray claiming his promises for a new heart, a new life - then believe that you receive the gift He promises you and thank God for the answer! God has a gift, an answer to every problem if you follow His plan and base you prayer life on His EXCEEDING, GREAT AND PRECIOUS PROMISES! 2 Peter 1:4. HIS PROMISES PROVIDE YOU WITH HEALING POWER, COURAGE, AND FAITH It is in these promises that Christ communicates to us his grace and power! They are leaves from that tree which is for the healing of the nations. Revelation 22:2. Received, assimilated, they are to be the strength of the character, the inspiration and sustenance of the life. Nothing else can have such healing power. NOTHING ELSE CAN HAVE SUCH HEALING POWER. NOTHING BESIDES CAN IMPART THE COURAGE AND FAITH which give vital energy to the whole being. {Ministry of Healing, page 122}. REPEAT AND BELIEVE GOD’S PROMISES IN PRAYER AND RECEIVE HIS PEACE It is peace that you need --Heavens forgiveness and peace and love in the soul. Money cannot buy it, intellect cannot procure it, wisdom cannot attain to it; you can never hope, by your own efforts, to secure it. But God offers it to you as a gift, without money and without price. Isaiah 55:1. It is yours if you will but reach out your hand and grasp it. The Lord says, Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you. Ezekiel 36:26. {Steps to Christ, page 49}. GOD GIVES HIS GIFTS TO THOSE WHO CONFESS, ASK, AND BELIEVE HIS PROMISE (A = ASK; B= BELIEVE) You have confessed your sins, and in heart put them away. You have resolved to give yourself to God. Now go to Him, and ASK that He will wash away your sins and give you a new heart. Then BELIEVE that He does this because He has promised. {Steps to Christ, page 49}. CHRIST GIVES THE GIFT OF HOLINESS TO THOSE WHO ASK HIM TO GIVE THEM THE GIFT OF FORGIVENESS AND CLEANSING THAT GOD OFFERS IN HIS PROMISES. You cannot atone for your past sins; you cannot change your heart and make yourself holy. But God promises to do all this for you through Christ. You BELIEVE THAT PROMISE. You confess your sins and give yourself to God. You will to serve Him. Just as surely as you do this, God will fulfill His word to you. If you believe the promise,--believe that you are forgiven and cleansed,--God supplies the fact; you are made whole, just as Christ gave the paralytic power to walk when the man believed that he was healed. It is so if you believe it. Do not WAIT to FEEL that you are made whole, BUT SAY, I BELIEVE IT; IT IS SO, not because I FEEL IT, BUT BECAUSE GOD HAS PROMISED. (Steps to Christ, page 51) This is the (C = claiming) part of the “Prayer of Faith = ASK, BELIEVE, CLAIM – In this one chapter (Faith and Acceptance) of Steps to Christ you will see the word “ask” used three times, the word “believe” used 18 times, and the word Claim used three times. Contemplative prayer is a prayer of feeling and God’s true prayer of faith is a prayer of faith (in God’s “exceeding, great, and precious promises.” 2 Peter 1:4. A= ASK; B= BELIEVE the promise; C = CLAIM the promise - Jesus says, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Mark 11:24. There is a condition to this promise--that we pray according to the will of God. But it is the will of God to cleanse us from sin, to make us His children, and to enable us to live a holy life. So we may (ASK) for these blessings, and (BELIEVE) that we receive them, and (CLAIM) THANK GOD THAT WE HAVE RECEIVED THEM. It is our privilege to go to Jesus and be cleansed, and to stand before the law without shame or remorse. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:1.(Steps to Christ, page 51) (The word Claim was added in the above paragraph to explain that after ASKING AND BELIEVING - God to give us the gift in His promise we are to (CLAIM) the gift by THANKING HIM FOR THE GIFT, even before our eyes see it. LEARN GOD’S “DIVINE SCIENCE” THAT RESULTS IN TRUE SUCCESS Prayer and faith are closely allied, and they need to be studied together. IN THE PRAYER OF FAITH THERE IS A DIVINE SCIENCE; it is a science that EVERYONE WHO WOULD MAKE HIS LIFEWORK A SUCCESS MUST UNDERSTAND. {Education, page 257}. Christ says, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Mark 11:24. He makes it plain that our asking must be according to Gods will; we must ask for the things that He has promised, and whatever we receive must be used in doing His will. The conditions met, the promise is unequivocal. {Education, page 257}. THIS IS THE ABC OF TRUE PRAYER – “ASK,” “BELIEVE,” AND IMMEDIATEDLY “RETURN THANKS” TO GOD WE HAVE RECEIVED For the pardon of sin, for the Holy Spirit, for a Christlike temper, for wisdom and strength to do His work, for any gift He has promised, we may ASK; then we are to BELIEVE THAT WE RECEIVE, and RETURN THANKS to God that we have received. {Education, page 258}. GOD HAS PLACED A GIFT IN EACH OF HIS PROMISES THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE We need look for no outward evidence of the blessing.
