Most people are, predictably, genuinely outraged by the idea of a dog being abused. Or baby seal clubbing (baby seals being clubbed, I mean. Not going to clubs. That would be adorable). Or seeing pretty much any bad thing happening to an animal. Unless, of course, by “bad thing” we mean ending up flame grilled between two buns or deep fried in a bucket. That’s different. That’s food. And when it comes to food, pretty much all ethical bets are off (unless of course we’re talking about eating dogs. Or horses. You should NEVER eat those. Because, you know…you just shouldn’t, apparently). “Moral Schizophrenia.” That’s how Gary Francione put it in a recent tweet about this great piece he wrote. I think it’s the perfect term; Mitt Romney tying a dog carrier to the roof of his car thirty years ago is suddenly a national issue in the same country where billions (with a “b”) of animals are subjected to unimaginable suffering every year just so we can stuff our collective gob. Because they’re tasty. If that’s not f’ing crazy, I don’t know what is. -Scot - See more at: vegcomic/2012/04/double-cheeseburger-standard/#sthash.w2emmEoq.dpuf
