Most people know that my son Luke has Aspergers Syndrome, a form of autism that is considered very high functioning, though social interaction can be very difficult for him. Loud noises (he calls it noise shock) and sensitivity to certain types of clothing and fabrics also affect him. His love of animals, all kinds of animals, and his concern for their rights have been a constant from the time he was old enough to communicate. I remember when he was little (and probably until he was 10 or so) he would walk around the dining room table over and over when he was feeling stressed. He would walk and walk for 20 minutes at a time, until he was soothed. These days, a hug from mom does the trick most of the time. Anyhow, I recently watched an amazing movie called Temple Grandin. I was in the throws of writing my dissertation when it first came out, so I did not get to see it then. This film moved me so much...my son has an amazing mind, and sees the world in his own unique way. He gets teased at school for being different, but thankfully has a nice group of friends that appreciate his originality and quirks. I love my Luke so much, and I know, without a doubt, that no one on this planet loves me more than he does. Thought of him when I saw this scene. I have said it before... even though it has not always been easy, I would not change one single hair on my Lukes complicated, amazing and mysterious head. He is an incredible gift to me.
