Most problems in the US healthcare industry today can be traced to the complete lack of a functional price mechanism. Theres not even a shell of price transparency in most cases, and the typical patient has neither a clue what hes paying for nor even a basic means of figuring out the price if he wanted it. Therefore you get crap like this: unexpected bills totaling in excess of an entire years salary from doctors who made negligible contributions - if any - to a surgical procedure, and who the patient didnt even know to be involved. nytimes/2014/09/21/us/drive-by-doctoring-surprise-medical-bills.html?_r=0
