Most writers starting out search for inspiration and instruction - TopicsExpress

Most writers starting out search for inspiration and instruction on the techniques of writing, as well as for plot and other content. Of course its not as simple as that. You can certainly discover the nuts and bolts of writing from a book, but more importantly, you have be able to put your own lightning in the bottle... One of the classic books on writing comes from that grand master of horror, Stephen King. Its titled, as you might expect, On Writing, and subtitled A Memoir of the craft. You can get a flavour of the content by the first line of the second foreword: This is a short book because most books about writing are filled with bullshit. :0) This is not the place for a full review, but suffice to say that the American edition which I imported has had a worthy place amongst my writing resources for some time now. At the time of purchase, I couldnt lay hands on a hardback of the British edition. I have never seen one in a second-hand bookshop until this afternoon, when I dropped in to Scott Southey and Amy Carters great new independent bookshop in Lower Hall Lane, Walsall - Southcart Books. And what should I find there, for the princely sum of just two quid, but the British hardback edition of On Writing (Hodder & Stoughton, 2000). Anyone who knows me well will realise how much I love poking around in second-hand bookshops. The arrival of Southcart Books in the old town is very welcome, and I shall certainly be back there on Saturday morning for their Grand Opening! I highly recommend anyone who can to pop in and offer them some encouragement, this is just the kind of specialist independent shop we need so much.
