Motorists are being urged to wear their seatbelts after more than 1000 people were caught not wearing safety restraints over the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends. Operation ‘Go Slow,’ the ANZAC Day long weekend traffic operation, started at 12:01am on Thursday 24 April 2014 and concluded at 11:59pm last night (Sunday 27 April 2014). The operation was a high-visibility policing operation involving the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and general duties police patrolling major traffic routes across the state. During the operation five people died on NSW’s roads (same as 2013), while there were 501 major crashes (down 136 ) resulting in 176 people being injured (down 38 from last year). Police conducted 173,038 breath tests (up 19,881 compared to 2013) resulting in 235 people being charged with drink-driving (down 77) while 387 people were caught not wearing seatbelts (up 5). A further 3086 people were issued infringement notices for speeding while police also issued 5054 infringements for other offences including mobile phone, helmet and registration offences. NSW Police Force’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, said he was disappointed to see so many people being caught not wearing seatbelts. “Over Easter we had 623 people found not wearing seatbelts while a further 387 people were caught this long weekend, that’s 1010 people caught over a nine day period. “We all know seatbelts save lives and it should be second nature to put one on when you get into a car but it appears this message is not getting through to some people. “If you don’t wear a seatbelt your chance of being seriously injured or killed in a crash significantly increases. “By not wearing a seatbelt you risk a $304 fine but pose an even greater risk to your own safety if you are involved in a crash,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.
