Movie Matts Movie Reviews The Monuments Men (2014) Who doesnt loved a good war story every now and then? Over the course of American history, there are so many stories that are dying to be told on the big screen. But its rich when you hear about a group of people or event that you never knew existed. This was why myself and many others were looking forward to The Monuments Men. Unfortunately, we were all let down. Towards the final years of World War II, the Nazis were gathering large amounts of art. Their plan was to put it all in what would have been a Fuhrer museum. This is when Lt. Franks Stokes (George Clooney) comes in. He believed that art is an important part of our culture. With the approval of the President, he gathers a group of men (Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, John Goodman, and Jean Dujardin) to help retrieve these precious artifacts. But as they get closer to the motherload, the war begins to take a toll on the team. Like a lot people, I was very excited for this movie. Good or not, this is one of the best casts ever assembled. The big letdown is that they arent used to their full advantage. Besides Clooney and Damon, everybody else is reduced to nothing. There is no bad acting to be seen, but the main problem is characterization. Over the course of the film, you barely get to know any of these guys. This is a problem because when there is a sign of peril, it means nothing because you dont care about what happens. Its disappointing because Im sure that this was a fascinating story of these brave men. Although, its not all bad. The cinematography is great and really shows the effects of war. Once again, this cast is excellent. But other than that, youre left wanting more. I should have known better when they moved the release date from December to February. All in all, there was effort put into it, but the film was too sloppy for my tastes. In closing, The Monuments Men tries to tell an epic war story, but ultimately fails in its execution. C
