Movies about the King Arthur – Top 5 I decided I would step outside the normal review of a new movie and give you my list of top 5 movies about King Arthur. These are NOT in order of my preference, but rather in order of release date. 1949 – A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court This movie is a musical adaptation of Mark Twain’s story about Hank Martin (played by Bing Crosby), an American mechanic who gets knocked out and wakes up in the land of King Arthur. He becomes friends with both Alisande la Carteloise (played by Rhonda Fleming) and Sir Sagramore (played by William Bendix) but incurs the heated of both Merlin (played by Muvyn Vye) and Morgan le Fay (played by Virginia Field). 1967 – Camelot This is also a musical adaptation of the Arthur legend. This movie open with King Arthur (played by Richard Harris) preparing for a battle against his long-time friend Sir Lancelot (played by Franco Nero). This is a battle he does not want to fight but has been forced into. He consults with mentor Merlin who encourages him to “think back” – that is where the main plot begins. 1975 – Monty Python & the Holy Grail This British comedy film was written and performed by the comedy group Monty Python (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. It was conceived during the gap between the third and fourth series of their popular BBC television program Monty Pythons Flying Circus. 1981 – Excalibur This dramatic dark fantasy film retells the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table and is based solely on the 15th century Arthurian romance, Le Morte dArthur by Thomas Malory. Excalibur features the music of Richard Wagner and Carl Orff. It stars Nigel Terry as Arthur, Nicol Williamson as Merlin, Nicholas Clay as Lancelot, Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere, Helen Mirren as Morgana, Liam Neeson as Gawain, Corin Redgrave as Cornwall, and (then relatively unknown) Patrick Stewart as Leondegrance. The film is named after the legendary sword of King Arthur that features prominently in Arthurian literature. 2004 – King Arthur The producers of the film claimed to present a historically accurate version of the Arthurian legends, supposedly inspired by new archaeological findings. The film is unusual in representing Arthur as a Roman officer rather than a medieval knight. It stars Clive Owen as Arthur, Ioan Gruffudd as Lancelot, and Keira Knightley as Guinevere. *** Honorable Mention *** 1963 – The Sword in the Stone This animated musical film was the 18th film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics Series. (It was the last Disney animated film released before Walt Disney’s Death) 1992 – Army of Darkness This American comedy-dark fantasy film was directed by Sam Raimi. It is the third installment of The Evil Dead franchise. The film stars Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. After being pulled through a time portal, Ash Williams lands in 1300 AD, where he is almost immediately captured by Lord Arthurs men, who suspect him to be an agent for Duke Henry, with whom Arthur is at war.
