Moving reflections on #MH370 by Sh. Tawfique Chowdhury Truly, there are moments in life when we are at such a loss of words that only refuge in Allah and heartfelt prayers suffice. I moved to Malaysia just a little while ago, but my heart is attached to the beautiful and warm people of this land. I may be in London since the time of the news, but my heart is with every mother, father, sibling, friend who is anxiously waiting for a news of khayr. With every calamity that falls on mankind, there are some things that must be kept in mind: (1) The incident is not just a test for the victims and their families. Rather, it is a test for each one of us - how do we react? Do we devote our energy to providing positive support and channelizing our words to sooth and pray for those in need, or use this time to exploit our own selfish personal, political or economic gains? If you cannot act as a fulcrum of change and positivity, the least you can do is not add to sensationalism and negativity. Take heed! With every post, with every word, with every action, Allah is revealing your true nature to you! So pay heed to your true self and ask Is this who we as a nation/people/citizens/individuals truly are? (2) The sole refuge that hundreds of the family have today is unrelenting faith in a Higher Power. Perhaps who they consider to be that Power differs. But it begs the question, specially to those who dont believe in God - Isnt it our natural inclination to turn to a Higher Power in our time of utmost need and desperation? Then on basis do you reject the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth when the going maybe good? (3) Our end is nearer and closer to each one of us than we can ever imagine. Being a frequent flyer myself, and leaving my family behind often, we cannot even begin to feel the anxiety of the families and passengers. Yet, how many times during boarding and take-off, during a safe landing, during a good day of health with family and loved ones do we actually cherish and thank Allah azza wa jalla? Do we actually feel that Allah could have chosen NOT to give this moment of love and affection to us and still, out of His Mercy, He did? The end is nearer than we can imagine - you dont have to take a flight to feel closer to it. It could come to you at an altitude of 35,000 or at the flat land on which you feel so safe. So how are we using His blessings and how are we preparing for the meeting with our Rabb? And if this incident doesnt serve as a major reminder, then what will? I ask Allah to give us the wisdom and ability to respond to this calamity with what is best, in words and actions. I ask Allah to comfort the hearts of those in distress and provide them patience to undergo this extreme test. In the end, I ask Allah to give us a news that is soothing to the hearts of the families as soon as possible, Aameen!
