Moving to the next artist in my presentation of the ABCs of the Golden Decade of Music 1965-1974, where I am selecting the artists alphabetically and playing selections of their songs I liked or found influential from that Golden Decade. I am currently in the Cs and playing a couple from Eric Clapton. Clapton is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. The bulk of Clapton’s solo work is outside of the GDM but there are a couple I will play. The first song of his I am selecting is After Midnight, a song written by JJ Cale, which was covered by Eric Clapton in 1970. The laid back boogie feel of After Midnight is a prime example of Cales signature style. Cale had written the song and released a demo version in 1966. Cale was unaware of Claptons recording of the song until it became a radio hit in 1970. He recalled to Mojo magazine that when he heard Clapton’s version playing on his radio, “I was dirt poor, not making enough to eat and I wasn’t a young man. I was in my thirties, so I was very happy. It was nice to make some money.” https://youtube/watch?v=rXyvhuyu4VE
