Mr Galilee relies on the input-output economic model of mining, while ignoring issues including competition with other industries for workers, the threat to other large employers such as the horse, wine and tourism industries, and the loss of productive land. But two recent court appeals (Warkworth and Ashton) exposed the inadequacy of this economic modelling, and the government has not explained how these anomalies will be remedied under new planning laws.
