Mr. O’s Weekend Picks No more NBA, congrats to LeBron James for winning the NBA title on Thursday night. Congrats to the San Antonio Spurs for a great, hard fought series I was hoping they would win. Seven game finals are always good to the last drop. Oh and congratulations to the rest of the Miami Heat who rode James coat tails to back-to-back titles. At least last year the other members of the Heat were a factor. This year, it was all about James carrying his pitiful teammates who shouldn’t even celebrate, just go home and pray to whoever they pray to that they’ll never have to play without LeBron. Stanley Cup Final Game 5 Saturday, June 22 Boston at Chicago, 8 p.m. (Series tied 2-2) Outlook: Just when everyone thought goals would be at a premium and Boston was ready to put a chokehold on the Stanley Cup final, sure enough the Blackhawks put a dent in the Bruins armour and put six on the board on the road to even up the series. It’s really awesome that there have been three OT games and Chicago has won two of them. I pegged the Bruins to take this series in seven and I’ll stick by it, but I kind of like Chicago going home after a big win in Game 4. Pick: Blackhawks. MLB Friday, June 21 Baltimore (42-31) at Toronto (35-36), 7 p.m. Probable Pitchers: Jason Hammel (7-4, 5.24) vs. RA Dickey (6-8, 4.90 ERA) Outlook: The Blue Jays are rolling having taken eight straight, are only one game under .500 and this game kicks off a huge 10 game stretch against AL East opposition. While Dickey hasn’t been Cy Young good, he’s been serviceable and given the Jays opportunities to win. Meanwhile, Hammel is 0-2 with a 6.32 ERA in three June starts and is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in his career at Toronto. The way the Jays bats have been going, it should spell trouble for the Orioles. Pick: Blue Jays All the Way. Friday Quick Picks Oakland, LA Dodgers, Texas, Cincinnati, Detroit Saturday, June 22 Quick Picks Toronto, San Francisco, Oakland, LA Angels, Houston, LA Dodgers Sunday, June 23 Quick Picks NY Mets, Colorado, Pittsburgh, K.C., Atlanta, Minnesota SOCCER Confederations Cup Saturday, June 22 Italia vs. Brazil, 3 p.m. Japan vs. Mexico, 3 p.m. Outlook: Brazil and Italia have already book their spots in the semi-finals of the tournament, but could want to avoid Spain in the next round, which would mean finishing first. Still, I feel both managers may rest their best players and it could make for an entertaining game as there’s huge depth on both benches. For Japan and Mexico, they are playing to get a win before going home. Japan has looked like a team capable of making waves against traditional powers and they surely feel unlikely to have lost to Italia on Wednesday. Picks: Brazil-Italia draw, Japan. Sunday, June 23 Spain vs. Nigeria, 3 p.m. Tahiti vs. Uruguay, 3 p.m. Outlook: Spain is already through and will want a perfect record from group play. They stated before the tournament they were heading to Brazil to win and they won’t take off this game against the African nation. Tahiti has been outscored 16-1 through two matches and it won’t get any better against Uruguay. I hope FIFA takes a look at this and changes their format slightly to include only teams who can actually provide entertaining football. All other seven nations have done that and having Tahiti in the tournament only has proven they really don’t belong. If the world’s football governing body wants us to take this seriously, they need to change something to stop this embarrassment from happening. Picks: Spain, Uruguay. Major League Soccer Quick Picks Saturday, June 22 TFC, San Jose, Columbus, FC Dallas Sunday, June 23 New York, LA, Portland
