Mrs. A.D. asks… Recently, I attended a funeral and I was surprised to see that the funeral directors were dressed very casually. Normally, they are always in suits and ties. Was there a reason for this? Roger Sept replies… You are correct, normally funeral directors and attendants are dressed in suits; however, on occasion a family will request that everyone attending dress casually, especially if the person who has died never enjoyed wearing formal attire. We feel it is important to honour the wishes of a family; consequently, we will participate in their requests. From the time Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel and Crematorium came into existence, we have committed ourselves to serving the family of the deceased wherever possible. We have had to dress casually or in western attire a number of times. We often find that the family and friends are much more comfortable to see us participating in honouring their loved one. Over the last number of years, funeral homes have began to live up to the term funeral service. More and more funeral chapels in North America have become much more progressive in respecting the needs of the family and willingly supply the service the family is seeking through personalization. As we have previously mentioned in prior columns, the funeral is not for the deceased, but for those left behind. We, at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel and Crematorium, pride ourselves in not only honouring the deceased, but by also respecting the wishes of the family. Consequently, when arranging a funeral, don’t limit yourself to tradition—ask the funeral director to discuss your ideas. By doing this, you may find a far more meaningful service.
