Ms. Cacciola first encountered tintypes in 2007 when she was studying art conservation and was looking at a set of Civil War-era portraits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She found the images haunting, little pieces of metal nestled into a velvet bed. They were intimate and one of a kind. Daguerreotypes preceded them, but tintypes were cheaper and allowed more people to possess an image of a loved one.
