Mum Was Right! “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!” “If you go out in the rain, you’ll catch a cold!” “If the wind changes, your face will stick like that…” Okay, so maybe the last one was one of those little white lies your parents told you to get you to behave, bit it turns out that more often than not – Mum got it right with all those famous clichés. According to researchers at Yale University, we’d have done well to pay attention to those Old Wives Tales, as many of them are seeded in truth. Think telling you that eating carrots would help you see in the dark was just a way to get you to eat your veggies? Turns out, carrots are a rich source of Vitamin A which is needed for night vision. Sure, eating one won’t give you x-ray vision, but they’re definitely a diet staple for those wanting to keep their eyes healthy. Scoff at the thought that counting sheep can help get you off to sleep? Again, Mum had the right idea! The researchers found that doing something boring gives you a ‘quiet mind’, which helps you drift off to sleep.
