Mum question:My DD is 6 yrs old turning 7 in July. She is in first class. She developed normally from a baby till now. She comes across as very confident little girl and quite advanced in many areas however she is really struggling with reading. She is on a very low reading level at school and is not making any progress at all. I did put her into private tutoring which has not helped at all. I have considered the fact that she might be dyslexic. If this is the case she can not be accessed until 8 years of age. Im very concerned and any input from this caring community would be really helpful Pinky says: Its so hard to watch your little ones struggle at school -it can have such a huge effect on their self-esteem. I have a son with dyslexia and its been a tough road for him. We need to be strong advocates for these kids. I also have a daughter who didnt learn to read until she was 8 - just wasnt interested and luckily I was home schooling her so there were no issues with feeling like she was failing , it was just developmental with her -by 10 she had read The Hobbit , it was as though over a period of a couple of weeks she had opened a box that was reading. I also took my son to a tutor - it wasnt helpful. The things I found helpful with my son - chiropractic care from a paediatric chiro (Braden Keil in Melbourne -he trains other paediatric chiropractors), Check out Irlens syndrome, my son also had a light sensitivity that distorted letters ( e.g. the white between the words came forward and the letters receded is the best explanation, this was discovered through specific eyesight testing, he then had coloured lenses for a while which helped a lot. Later I took him to SPELD for a thorough educational psych assessment. Meanwhile , help your little one engage and enjoy a passion /interest that will boost her sense of accomplishment - e.g. swimming, music, and read to her so her language skills and comprehension grow regardless of her reading level.
