Mum question:We mostly did BLW with my now 27 month old son. He loved food and ate everything until he was about 15 months old. Since then he has gradually gotten more and more picky to the point now where we only have about 4 dinners he will usually eat and he only wants peanut butter on toast for lunch and muesli for breakfast. (He will eat fruit, crackers or bread any time though.) I never force/bribe/coax him to eat and I try to calmly offer him a meal and let him choose to eat it or not. I try to avoid late afternoon snacks and we all eat the same food together as a family. He still has one breast feed first thing in the morning. Until recently I have been cooking meals that Im confident he will eat but our menu is getting very limited and Im worried hes not getting enough variety/nutrients. But if I serve a meal he doesnt want he wont even come to the table, let alone taste it. He just screams and pulls at me to try and get me away from the table and tries to push away my plate. I dont want to start cooking multiple meals and Ive heard healthy toddlers wont starve themselves so Ive stopped offering him anything else - even milk before bed (only water). He seems to have accepted this but we are really struggling to deal with the tantrums. Weve tried ignoring them but because hes physically pulling/pushing me its difficult. Ive tried cuddling him and calmly explaining that its dinner time and while he doesnt have to eat mummy wants to, or quietly sitting with him elsewhere until he calms down but when we return to the table he gets angry again. He is our first child and weve tried to parent him gently but Im really unsure about how to deal with this behaviour and Im starting to really dread dinner time. The screaming and pushing isnt something I think is acceptable. Should I just keep cooking what he wants? If not, it right to not offer anything else? How should we handle the tantrums?
