Murang’a County is eyeing increased milk production and value addition that will see each youth own a dairy cow as a way of creating jobs. Governor Mwangi wa Iria, a former New KCC managing director, says the project will raise farmers’ income and uplift the county whose backbone is agriculture. The county has set aside Sh385 million for building coolers, a processing factory, a heifer breeder and a feeds factory. Sh175 million of the cash will go to constructing coolers. “Currently, we only have four cooling plants in the county and we intend to have an additional 31 in the various wards,” said the governor. To boost processing, Sh100 million will go to building factories which will pasteurise and pack milk. Murang’a will construct a Sh10 million animal feeds factory and another Sh100 million will be spent on breeding and providing affordable artificial insemination services.
