Murchison Pony Club News June 2014 The chilly season is upon us and all our equines are woolly and muddy but they are still getting lots of attention, in fact, they need more when it is winter! We are continuing on with rallies albeit on irregular dates as instructors and time allows. Our club always welcomes coaches who are familiar with or learning the pony club syllabus, on a regular or when-possible basis. Meanwhile we will continue to book NZPCA National Coach Kevin Lawrence and have coaches coming from Marlborough when they can. Our club is fortunate to have Kris McDougall and Kathryn Mason already taking theory sessions and Kim Charles’ and Nicola Luckman’s offer of help. The next team event for our riders is Marlborough Trophy, the MNWC Area Teams Dressage Championships in August at Motueka. The first year we entered we were 5th, the next 3rd, so this year with Denys Jones at the helm we will come 1st! We will also be aiming to keep the Horsemastership Trophy for the 3rd year running. Sadly, one of our key riders, Tazmyn Charles, is recovering from a kick from a horse earlier this month . We wish Taz a speedy recovery and hope you are back in the saddle soon ! The McKenzies have just returned from a week away in Canterbury where our horse boarded with Florence West (nee Esler). Locals may recall the Esler children – Florence, Nancye and Sam - when they lived up the Tutaki South just past the Tiraumea Bridge. Florence began riding on a hairy pony with a rope bridle and went on to represent NZ (1970’s) on her St James horse Dusky Bay. She is still an accomplished rider and a wealth of knowledge (and stories), and dedicates herself to encouraging others in many equestrian fields. While in Canterbury, Ginny competed at the Okuku One Day Event at Training (95cm) level coming first in the dressage and overall. She also had cross-country training and a flatwork lesson with Florence, so a well-rounded week! We are proud of all our riders when they achieve at any level, large or small, with “PBs” (Personal Bests) being the most important! Coming rallies; to be advised as soon as possible. Stay safe and warm, Happy horsing, Bron McKenzie, MPC Chief Coach 5239 338
