Mushroom of the Day 9/25/14 - Hygrophoropsis - TopicsExpress

Mushroom of the Day 9/25/14 - Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca is oft-called the False Chanterelle, but unlike species of Cantherellus which have blunt, ridge-like folds under the cap; this mushroom instead features blade-like, flimsy, true gills as seen in most mushrooms. It also is much less sturdy than the robust and hardy Cantharellus. It can be fairly easy to recognize with its bright orange and repeatedly forking and decurrent (running down the stem) true gills, white spore print, Chanterelle-like appearance from above, and it often grows near well-rotted wood. Season of growth is Summer and Fall, and sometimes into Winter in warmer areas. This species is widely distributed, being found across North America and Europe, in hardwood and conifer forests. It has been described as both edible and toxic by different mycologists in the past *Gill close-up photo by Christian Schwarz
