Music Monday The Bell Ringer was the most complicated piece - TopicsExpress

Music Monday The Bell Ringer was the most complicated piece that I had written at this time. It was inspired by a Pablo Neruda poem of the same name. The melody has a lot of contrary motion in it. Dynamics and phrasing are of upmost importance. All the melodies were played on cue. There are instances where Branford and I are playing rhythms across the time. Whenever I play with Branford I feel I can play any old way because I know he’ll follow me. He has great musical reflexes. Whether it’s phrasing together or improvising harmony, simply put, he’s just easy to play with. The harmonic palate was much more sophisticated then the other songs that I was writing at the time. This was the first time I used the sound of the Sharp 5 chord. I started using dominant chords with different extensions then we were used to playing on. You’ll notice that the solo section has a few chords listed. We would all listen to each other and freely alternate between the two different chord qualities. We used the different harmonies to create different moods for our solos. Enjoy, Wynton
