Music sales authority Billboard have confirmed that Urban Outfitters recent claim to be the worlds number one vinyl retailer is false. Last week, it was reported that the high street fashion and lifestyle chain had deemed themselves to be the biggest vinyl sellers in the world, with the companys chief administrative officer Calvin Hollinger quoted as saying: Music is very, very important to the Urban customer… in fact, we are the worlds number one vinyl seller. Now, Billboard have come out and confirmed this to be untrue. According to a survey conducted to verify Urban Outfitters claim, results have shown that Amazon actually holds the title of the worlds biggest vinyl seller. The results of the survey, as reported by billboard, showed that Amazon held a 12.3% share of the market in America compared to Urban Outfitters 8.1%. And while the survey was only conducted in the U.S., they concluded that Amazons larger music presence internationally was enough to maintain this lead. This summer Jack Whites Lazaretto became the biggest-selling vinyl album for 20 years. Whites second solo album was released in June and by August had sold 60,000 vinyl copies, making it not just the biggest-selling vinyl album of the year, but the biggest-selling since Pearl Jams Vitalogy was released in 1994.
