Must See Movie Of The Week #2: Casualties Of War (1989) - Michael J. Fox, Sean Penn. Directed by Brian De Palma. Based on true events from the Vietnam war, this is the horrifying and disturbing story of a group of American GIs who kidnap, rape and murder a Vietnamese girl and how one man (Fox) vows to bring the guilty men to justice. Very uncomfortable viewing but compelling in equal measures it is easily Foxs career best performance. Special mention has to go to the heart wrenching portrayal from Thuy Thu Le as the girl. It will be her performance that burns into your memory long after the credits roll. De Palma has never shied away from controversy in his work and this is a fine addition to his CV, possibly his best. Gritty and harrowing - you have been warned - but it is a riveting condemnation of war and the destructive power that conflict imparts on the innocent and innocence.
