Must say I wasnt at all impressed with the slice of China I experienced at the weekend. You certainly dont go to Guangzhou for the sights or views. Skyscraper city compared to Phnom Penh. And hardly a smile to be seen on the faces of the Chinese, who went about their business with a determined stare straight ahead. They didnt bat an eyelid at a foreigner, even though I saw only one other western couple in the whole weekend (in a city of 11 million), which included the football (obviously, though the footy officials were warm and welcoming) but also a visit to a city center park and a massive shopping mall. The Chinese didnt look a happy bunch either, whether they were dancing or exercising in the park or milling around the shopping streets and mall. The warmth of Cambodia and its people towards visitors is positively volcanic by comparison.
