My 2nd grade teacher had an often repeated mantra, and I still remember it today. Think before you speak. She said it at varying times; a careless classmate using hurtful words, a student speaking out of turn, or even when she was seeking an answer that just required a little more thought. The funny thing is, I dont remember her name. But I often find myself thinking about those words she said, especially in the past 3 or so years. For whatever reason, good or bad, weve had a fair share of protracted sickness, injury, and even death in our family in the past few years. And during all of those times, weve seen both the absolute best of human kindness and compassion, and (maybe not the worst, but...) a healthy dose of foot in mouth syndrome. The feet chewers generally mean well, (at least I want to think so) but sometimes we (all of us) can say the dumbest things when we are unsure, anxious, or just uncomfortable about a difficult situation. I came upon this article awhile back, and revisited it today, after a conversation with a sweet friend who has just been diagnosed with cancer. Just as this article says, we will all have a moment in the center circle of a really difficult time. Probably more than once. But if we could all just do more comforting inward, the world might be a little easier on everyone.
