My Baby Brother Kyle Cashwell, is on my mind. Kyle has been - TopicsExpress

My Baby Brother Kyle Cashwell, is on my mind. Kyle has been through so much this past week and he has so much more to endure on his road to recovery from this awful accident! Everybody talks about Fridays being bad or unlucky days, I believe something got mixed up and Mondays are the jinxed days for our family! We do appreciate, everything that has been done for Kyle and our family in the wake of this unbelievable accident! Kyle will be truly amazed when he wakes up and learns what all has been done on his behalf along with all the prayers and notes of love, support and encouragement. On Monday October 20th, 2014, a beautiful fall day, brother was picking corn with a snapper corn picker when while he was working on it the PTO lever jumped into the on position and lurched into him as he was trying to check on that particular piece of equipment ( at this point we dont know for sure if the picker was jammed or exactly what he was checking), the picker lunged forward as the PTO started up and somehow he got his right arm caught in the corn picker. In an attempt to get leverage to pull his arm out, he put his booted right foot up on the header of the corn picker and his foot slipped as he pulled his arm out and then his right foot got caught in a chain mechanism of the picker. Kyle called 911 to get help using his cell phone. Help came in the form of a lot of friends, family and co-workers many that have known us all since we were young, or we grew up together. Jason Riley as Sampson County Detective was the first person on the scene in the cornfield that day and he used his brand new BDU belt as a tourniquet on Kyles right arm to stem the bleeding. Another Deputy arrived and once again another belt was secured around Kyles right leg as a tourniquet. Riley told me that Kyle was awake, alert and talking the whole time and told them how to provide care for him. Right down to when the Fire Department arrived with the Power Tools and Spreaders to get his foot out. I was told that Kyle even told them where to place the spreaders and how to get his foot out of the corn picker, the flight team said he talked to them all the way to Duke along with telling them what meds they could give him that would help him. Kyle obviously is NOT a quitter! He was determined to make sure the job was done the right way. Upon arrival to Duke Kyle was taken into Emergency Surgery Immediately, the staff kept us updated on his condition about every 2 hours. Kyle stayed in surgery for 10 plus hours Monday afternoon and all of Monday night. The surgeons said that they would try to save his limbs that were damaged but cautioned that they were not hopeful. At least they would try to save as much of his injured right arm and leg as they could. Kyle has now been in ICU at Duke 5 days at this point. He has had 4 surgeries since Monday afternoon. He is on a ventilator and has been kept deeply sedated except at certain times when they turn the medication off so that they can let him wake up enough to check his neurological function. He also has a severe case of pneumonia and now his kidneys are acting up due to all of the muscle tissue being destroyed and overloading his kidneys. On Friday they also found that his left shoulder was dislocated when they looked at the chest xray they took of Friday morning. So during the surgery on Friday the left shoulder was put back correctly into joint. It is truly a miracle that my brother is still here on this Earth. And even though hes critically injured and sick my brother is still here. He has a long, long road ahead to recovery, but he can do anything! Please, Please continue to Pray For Kyles continued healing and recovery. We love and appreciate all of the many acts of kindness, the love, the support and the prayers, we are just so grateful that Kyle and this family know so many terrific, God fearing People!! Our love to all of you!! Andrea (Kyle Cashwells oldest Sister) with Larson Cashwell,LaLa, Sara Beth Livingston Cashwell, Gay Cashwell, Kristy Peterson Cashwell, Frank Hobbs
