My Beloved Son Matthew 3:17; 17:5 ...This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Talk about a dramatic introduction! Jesus public ministry began with his baptism by John. Jesus emerged from the water as the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, descended from above. A voice from heaven cut through the solemnity of the moment: This is my beloved Son. The implications of these words were staggering. The actual Son of God had entered our realm to live among us. Nothing would ever be the same again. The voice of a proud Father put an explanation point on Jesus baptism. He identified Jesus as his Son, then followed with six words that set the tone for Jesus entire public ministry: In whom I am well pleased. Gods seal of approval was on everything Jesus did, from his healing of unclean lepers to his condemnation of Israels religious leaders. Jesus work satisfied God and brought him joy. Anyone who aligned himself with Jesus and his work found Gods favor. Anyone who opposed it faced Gods displeasure.
