My Economics of Sports students (and also Nancy Hogshead-Makar ,Jack Zibluk, Phil Miller, and Karl Idsvoog, among others) might be interested in this article. The University of Alabama-Birmingham is the first FBS school to eliminate its football program since 1995. The irony is that 44% of FBS football programs lose money, with the average loss being $3.5 million. In fact, in the mid-major conferences, football and mens basketball typically lose as much money as all the womens sports combined. Yet when it comes to fiscal austerity, the football and mens basketball budgets are typically exempt from budget cuts. My own published research (Journal of Sports Economics) suggests why---athletic director salaries and bonuses tend to be tied to the success of the spectator sports, especially football. sports.yahoo/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/uab-officially-shuts-down-its-football-program-210938522.html
