My Experiments with THIRST. Hoooosh........ finally finished in 5hrs & 33 min........ completely humbled by what a hot weather can do to your well laid plans..... Although the forecast was 23 deg till 8 a.m, I felt it must have reached 30s, was feeling really hot.. Saw many runners removing their t-shirt & running just on shorts...Running plan was to remain between the 4.30 & 5 hr pacer & slowly increase the speed after 20 km. Try nasal breathing till 30 kms, then let body decide what to do...Everything went according to plan. To handle the uphill...I had decided to walk half the distance & run the balance .Last time at around 37 kms, I had cramps in both legs......mostly due to change in running posture & speed. This time I remained straight & kept on running. The training of, long hill runs & exercises in water was helping. All the while I was drinking to thirst & whenever I felt too hot inside, poured water on my head, neck, face & backside of Knee. Finally, I finished in 5hrs & 33 min. The major reason for increase in timing over last year was, - I felt it was too hot especially after 8 a.m resulting considerable reduction in speed. - I had traumatic experience of cramps last time so was very careful at each uphill, & consciously decided to walk. So finally although I did not have cramps till the finish ..it was at a heavy cost of timing. This time I tried out two new things, - I drank water to thirst & decided to cool down core hot body temperature from outside instead of inside. - During the run I had only liquid intake & no solid food..... Lesson learnt: During a marathon there are just too may variables....one has to decide how to balance each one of them. & there will always a cost attached to each variable. Human body is a amazing machine, one learns about it only under extreme conditions....physically & psychologically......With every event, I learn something new & realize that there still so much to explore & understand........ ;-) OK........ so now for the next week no running.....just swimming....to recover.......& planning for next event..........;-) & BTW this 5hr monkey will be irritating me whole year...... until i can break it next time at the same place & on the same terrain.
