“My Human-ness” I learned at a very early age... Subjected to another’s rage... That life can be anything but fair... That I would have my burdens to bear... I was forced to seek refuge in religion... But I often questioned this decision... Being punished for things I didn’t do... My cynicism only grew... The church said if you stay, you must pay... I said, “No thanks,” and walked away... And began a wider search... For answers not found in the church... That day, I made a conscious decision… To step aside from world religions... Convinced that my life and the things it demand… Would likely be safer in my own hands… This led me to make another critical correction... To establish with God a direct connection... And thus, I found my true identity... I discovered that soul is really me... But that’s when my struggles really began... That’s when I met my three “best friends”... Mind, body, emotions, that sorted mess… That constitutes my human-ness… They were a team that moved against my grain… Challenged every truth I gained... They were hell bent on running the show... And I hadn’t the courage to say no... They yearned for all manner of things… Never considering the trouble they’d bring... And when turmoil hounded them endlessly… They’d retreat, and leave the mess to me… One pulls me left; another right… I was in the middle of a constant fight… And I’d just grin and bear it, since… It was too late to consider the consequence… It was always three against one… They were having all the fun… And the mind, with its logic, would justify… “Life is for living, until you die”… Working with them was a constant test… I’d try to move forward, and they’d regress… I’d try to focus; they’d pull me astray… Seems they were always in my way… I always gave in to their demands… Let them go as if it was out of my hands… With me pushed aside, they would binge for days… And when the bill came, I’m the one that paid… But lo, came the day that I’d had enough... I was up to my eyeballs in all their stuff... And I screamed such a scream as to wake the dead... To clear the cobwebs from my head... “Why do I allow such pain, such strife... When I’m the one that gives us life?”... I’m the reason that we exist!... And I’m infinitely more than my human-ness!! It suddenly became crystal clear to me… The way this relationship ought to be... Thus, I set upon my task post-haste... To put my human-ness in its place... I ignored all demands; I denied all requests... I revoked their power to manifest... And devised a mantra to drown out their voice... In the end, they gave in; they had no choice... I’m now captain of THIS ship… I give the orders; I crack the whip... And when I speak, they must take heed… They now must follow where I lead… I’ve put them all on a leash, and now… They can go only as far as I allow… But all their devilry has ceased… I can finally have some peace... I’ve taken firm and final command… No longer a slave to their demands… I’ve put an end to their disgrace… And resigned them to their rightful place… As trouble as they are, I must confess… The demons still have some usefulness… So, I take them with me everywhere… See to their needs with due care… And still, I have those moments when... I’m sailing the Cosmic Seas within... And right in the middle of a stellar view… I’m distracted by this motley crew… But aggravation would only aggravate... Give mind something more to debate... And before I know it, I’d regress... Victimized again by my human-ness... So, I give it no bone to chew... Its reign is over; my life is new... With so many issues looming large… Life is much better with me in charge... So, until my day is finally done... I’m sailing toward the Great Beyond... Where life and Spirit intersect...
