My Quora Digest email this morning....... Entomology: Do ants panic when separated from the main colony/trail? Whether they are panicked or stressed or confused is unknown. They may not have an emotional response at all, and just be a like a computer without direction. It takes a lot to stress out an ant, if anything can do it. When separated from a trail, the ant is also separated from the chemical cues it uses to find its way from the food to the nest. Some ants are actually completely blind (its dark in their underground nests, why be able to see?), so being away from the scents they depend on is like being suddenly blinded. The behaviour you noticed of them changing directions is them trying to find the trail again. To be lost for an ant would be terrifying… but I dont think ants can experience terror. Theyre too brave, or at least foolhardy. Your ant would probably keep trying to find its sisters until it either found them or died of starvation, without any other thought. Bet you always wondered about that hey?!?!
