The Man of Steel was the first superhero and is still the character behind countless comics, movies, TV shows, videogames, and much, much more. One of the most recognizable icons in the world, Superman generates huge revenues and still, after all these decades, controversy over ownership and control of the franchise. Discussing Superman’s matchless legacy is an all-star anniversary panel including Superman himself, DEAN CAIN, Eisner Award Hall of Famer NEAL ADAMS (Superman; Action Comics), and TRAVIS LANGLEY (PsychologyToday.) (DAVIDSON BALLROOM/LEVEL 1M) 4:00 – 4:45PM AMERICAN SPLENDOR: HARVEY PEKAR’S LEGACY Harvey Pekar, creator and writer of American Splendor comics, and through them, inspiration for a whole branch of memoir comics, who passed away in 2010, would have been 74 years old on October 8th. His influence on comics is as strong today as ever. To celebrate his legacy, artist and photographer, DANIELLE BATONE, to whom Harvey and his wife Joyce Brabner were legal guardians, will be appearing via Skype (connection permitting) to talk about growing up with Harvey and about Pekar’s legacy with comics historian Danny Fingeroth (The Rough Guide to Graphic Novels). (ROOM 202) SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20th 11:30AM – 12:15PM WILL EISNER’S “CONTRACT WITH GOD” AT 35 Will Eisner was one of the giants of the field of sequential art. Eisner expert DANNY FINGEROTH (Chair of the Will Eisner Week organizing committee) presents a visual tour through Eisner’s body of work and discuss his ongoing influence, 35 years after the publication of the groundbreaking, A Contract With God, a book that pretty much invented the entire graphic novel category. Eisner’s other landmark works—including The Spirit and P.S. Magazine--will be discussed as well. (ROOM 202) 1:30 – 2:15PM SUPERVILLAINS AND PSYCHOLOGY Every great superhero faces a rogues gallery full of colorful supervillains. What makes a great supervillain? How evil do they have to be? Are they having fun? Do they resemble real criminals in any way? Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight) assembles of super-team of experts to explore what it means to be a supervillain and what kind of person could become one.
