My ad hoc manifesto for today: Entertainment is not art. - TopicsExpress

My ad hoc manifesto for today: Entertainment is not art. Entertainment has a certain goal completely distinct from arts goal. People get offended when you say a TV show or commercial film cannot be art. I thinks its an American problem: to not be able to be humble and learn what art is.. and instead insisting any entertainment done well is art. Art is art. It is a specific dialogue with a specific history. Artists can use any tool from entertainment - video, sound, whatever.. but they do it within an art context. A film or TV show can be done artfully and they are artforms but they are not automatically art unless they were made by an artist to be art, not made by a group of creative and business professionals whose goal is mass entertainment. An artists goal is not mass entertainment or even pleasing an audience. It is to build on their own thoughts in material (or nonmaterial) within an art context.
