My aunt Gretchen Caire who raised me, along with other young women, who were part of a service club organized by Black mothers in Madison in the 1960s. The Impressionettes was established to ensure that their daughters and other black girls develop a positive self-identity in a community that was devoid of leadership opportunities for black girls in schools, and devoid of positive images of black women in leadership roles, professional workplaces, schools, and society in general as well. The photo is from the Wisconsin State Journal, January 29, 1965, Section 2, page 3. My aunt was 15 years old in this photo.
