My beautiful loving sister wrote this amazing letter which touched me deeply. The slaughter in Taiji has escalated this year and many young have been violently taken from their mothers, their families, their community and their home to be sold and imprisoned in aquarium and swim-with-dolphin facilities while those remaining are brutally slaughtered. 1,270 dolphins from six species have been driven into the notorious killing cove so far this season; of those, 694 were killed, 422 were released, and 153 were captured live. I have been busy writing letters of protest, signing petitions and volunteering locally with Sea Shepherd to get awareness, education and action out amongst the masses. This is what I have chosen to do because the despair of standing by and doing nothing when I know what is happening to these ineffable sentient beings, greatly diminishes my hope. As Andrew Boyd so eloquently speaks to: Compassion hurts. When you feel connected to everything, you also feel responsible for everything and you cannot turn away. Your destiny is bound with the destinies of others. You must either learn to carry the universe or be crushed by it. You must grow strong enough to live the world, yet empty enough to sit down at the same table with its worst horrors. I am practicing, what often seems insurmountable, the ability to carry the universe rather than be crushed by it. I struggle with this everyday. To Paul Watson, to the courageous Sea Shepherd volunteers in Taiji who, day after day, sit down at the table with unspeakable horror and savagery so that the rest of the world is made aware of what takes place, I am incredibly grateful for what they have taken on...that their hearts and souls can bear what they witness. If they can bear it, it goes without question that I too, can do my part. This atrocity must stop. Please, find the time and go to seashepherd.org/cove-guardians and learn more. Sign the petition, write a letter, and above all, please vote with your dollar and do not support or attend any facility that imprisons cetaceans. Think of what their life was like before they were abducted, put in sensory deprivation concrete tanks and forced to perform tricks for food. Watch the Sea Shepherd live-stream video from Taiji to see for yourself the roundup, the selection of young taken from mothers, families and communities desperately trying to protect their children from abduction, more so then not, at the cost of their own life. Having had the great honour of being amongst whales and dolphins in the wild where they have graciously welcomed me as friend, I can assure you that although their bodies may be shaped differently from ours, their hearts and souls are the same. I would not stand by and let this genocide happen to my family, my friends, my community and I will not stand idly by and let this happen to beings, who, I know deeply within the core of my being, feel the same as I do. They are as much my relations as any human. We are all one. We are all connected. We are all in this together and what we do as one, makes a huge difference as a whole. Please help. Please pass on. With hope, Sarah
