My beloved Father in law Dr V Panchamoorthy (64) left this world the same day in 2002. He is a renowned cardio-thoracic surgeon and the countrys first and only surgeon to acquire a Ph.D in cardio-thoracic surgery, He retired as chief cardio-thoracic surgeon of the Government General Hospital, Chennai, apart from having the credit of being the only surgeon to acquire a Ph.D in cardio-thoracic surgery which he obtained from Madras University in 1999, also had the credit of performing 37 open heart surgeries in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in an impoverished operation theatre in 1994. He performed 16 mitral commissurotomy (heart valve operation) in a day on July 29, 1980, at the Government General Hospital, the maximum by any surgeon so far in the country. He also performed six open heart surgeries on a single day at the hospital on April 15, 1987, when no such surgeries were done in other major hospitals in the city.
