My boys play a ton of video games every day.They also love to research about the games online. I spent about a year fighting them about this and feeling very fearful. I have since come to realize that many of my fears were unfounded and causing serious problems with my relationship with my kids. When my boys know that I trust them and support their interests, they are more willing to negotiate with me. I can remind them now that they have been on the computer for a while, and maybe they need to go outside and move their bodies, or take a break from the screen and do something else. They understand and dont fight because they know I am not suggesting that what they love is wrong. Also, in changing my judgements about the games, I am better able to see the benefits they are getting from the games. They are reading better, writing better, learning coding, learning communication skills, learning research skills, learning how to discern online resources… I just always try to remember that I am my childs partner.
