My brother Mark included me at the bottom of his 10 Most Influential Books Ive Read List, urging me to share my list. 1. 1 and 2 Samuel: This is where I saw God really working into the beauty and messiness of peoples lives. If He could do it back then, Hes gotta be involved today. 2. World According to Garp. John Irving. Brilliantly written and hopeful. 3. Jitterbug Perfume. Tom Robbins. The book is a story about forever. I love that. 4. Beyond Good & Evil. Friedrich Nietzsche. Read it in 9th or 10th grade. Horrible in both writing style and content, but spoke right into the heart of a self-centered idiot. Wouldnt recommend it today, but it really did have impact. 5. On Combat and On Killing. Dave Grossman. These two books should be required reading for anyone thinking about working with Veterans. 6. The Tin Drum. Gunther Grass. Book is thicker than syrup and priceless. It reads like poetry, not in a hurry to get to the end - but deals with pain, loss and redemption through the eyes of a strange little German named Oscar before, during and after WW2. 7. Christus Viktor. Gustaf Aulen. It is not an easy read, but I love it because it cuts through the major schools of Christian thought today, straight into the heart of the question, Why Jesus? Most of my theology books dont get a lot of use. This one does. 8. Where the Wild Things Are. Maurice Sendak. Along with a couple Seuss books, Ive read this one hundreds of times. We had to buy Andreas a second one because the first one fell apart from use. Might seem a little biographical to me. Just saying. 9. The Old Man and the Sea. Earnest Hemingway. Brilliant work. I am exhausted when I read it. 10. The Big Book, especially Chapter 5. Looking over my list, it seems to have a couple of threads: redemption and hope in a world that might as well be a circus. Id very much like to see Hannaloras list, as well as David Adams.
