My brother and his wife went to an art museu this weekent and saw an exhibit of Old Dutch masters paintings. It reminded me of an evening Mom and I shared a long time ago. When I worked at IHS, my first job, we were owned by a U.S. holding company called Indian Head. Indian head was owned by Thyssen-Bornemisza, which was owned by Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza. He personally owned a large art collection, including many Dutch Masters. When the East wing of the National Art Gallery was built on the mall, the first exhibit included a sampling of the Tyssen’s paintings. As an IHS employee, I was invited to a private showing the evening before the museum opened. The director of the museum and Thyssen hosted the party. Mom came with me and we met the old Baron and marveled at the Dutch masters paintings. The way the artists handled light made it look so real. Mom and I were amazed at how realistic and light and airy the lace on their clothing looked. We simply couldn’t believe anyone could be that talented. Mom was so curious about how it was done. I wonder if that evening spurred to try her hand at painting several years later.
