My dad passed away 24 years ago Wednesday. A couple years later, after a trip to Montana, I found out that also was the anniversary of Custers Last Stand. As I stood over his headstone upon a graveside visit and realized it, I had to smile. Dad loved the West - he hopped trains to find work out there during the Depression and visited and worked for our Ernster cousins in Kalispell and in the Dakotas. His lamp table always had a stack of Western magazines and paperbacks. I daresay Dad thought hed live forever. But if he had to pick a day to go, that would have been it. Hes looking down and smiling at me right now -- from his Army picture on the living room wall, and in a lot of other ways too.
