My dad was a plumber, a Master Plumber actually. I dont recall a time when he thought he should have been anything else ... he was always a plumber. It seems that, nowadays, we dont define ourselves according to a single occupation. We might describe skill sets, we may refer to education, we might even consider how talents cross over a dozen job categories. Many just dont seem to rest on one occupation but rather, jump from one career to another, with surprising success. Theres a lot to be said for a determined, single-minded focus on being the best in a field, like my dad, the plumber. But theres an argument to be made that we are a work in progress and what we thought we should be, years ago, just isnt right for the person weve become. One thing is clear: whether we work in or outside the home; whether we engage our physical or intellectual skills; whether we work the day or night shift, matters not. Its the intent of our effort, the sincerity of our work, the clarity of purpose that defines us, gives us satisfaction and moves us onward. My lifes work probably wont end with a gold watch ... but if I can be confident that my work truly mattered, the gold will be woven into the details of my days. And I will smile.
