My dad was always very reluctant to discuss his service in the Coast Guard during World War II. After many years of pressing him he did reveal that he was on an oil tanker that was sank by a German Submarine in the Gulf of Mexico off the island of Aruba. After his death, I was going through his things and found a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. My dad has always been my hero, now I know he was a real American hero. On this Memorial Day Weekend let us remember all those who gave so much for this country, especially those who humbly served and those who gave all when it was required. I am very proud of all the members of my family who have served and are still serving. It is important that we remember that Freedom is not Free.
