My daughter has a large box from one of her brothers christmas gifts. She asked me to help her turn it into a space ship. She asked me to cut a hole in it so she can see. As I am cutting she says, Daddy I wish I was a boy. well thats ok, but why do you want to be a boy? So that I can be an astronaut. Girls cant play with space ships or rockets. Who told you that? (shrugs and no answer) Brydien, anyone can play with rockets and space ships. Lots of girls are astronauts. You can be an astronaut if you want to. ok daddy, that sounds great. can I paint my nails too? of course you can, we can do that later. ok daddy, but boys cant have painted nails because glitter is for girls only. Well, most boys do not like glitter or painted nails, but if they do like those things, it is perfectly ok for them to paint their nails. oh, ok. Well, can you make a panel with buttons on my spaceship? Of course! And after we make your spaceship, maybe we can look at pictures of real girls in space, do you want to do that? Yay! So I assume she learns these gender roles at school. I have a lot of work to do.
