My deepest condolences to the staff and students at Gwendolyn Brooks Academy. A special education teacher who worked there was among three people killed and 10 wounded in shootings Thursday. Betty Howard, 58, of the 2200 block of South 14th in Broadview, was shot in the head in the 700 block of East 79th about 5:25 p.m. “Our entire staff, students, and parents are deeply saddened by the unexpected, untimely, and unwarranted loss of our friend, teacher, and colleague, Dr. Betty Howard. Dr. Howard has been a member of our family for many years. Her love for all children, but particularly children with diverse learning needs, was second to none,” D’Andre Weaver, the principal at Brooks Academy, said in a statement. I have nothing but good things to say about this school: their student Riley Jones was our 2013 Black History Essay winner, and I was their commencement speaker at last years graduation.
