My dog has a hurt leg and is in a face cone. She is going stir - TopicsExpress

My dog has a hurt leg and is in a face cone. She is going stir crazy and cant do *anything*, so I have been teaching her left and right. So far, it seems to be working. I was curious about methods others have used to teach this. The method I use is Sue Ailsbys and, in a nutshell, is: 1. get eye contact for several seconds. 2. proof for distractions (waving hands around, etc) 3. hold a treat in each fist, put fists to the left/right of the dog 4. move your right fist a little until dog looks, c/t 5. same with left 6. when these cues are solid, start to pair verbal cue for each before the movement cues. 7. wait until dog looks prior to the movement cue, but after the verbal. Its going pretty well, but as we work the left/right, her eye contact starts to deteriorate and she offers looking back and forth. When she does this, I pull my hands back to my body, get eye contact and extend them again (P-). I suppose I should work eye contact up again at the beginning of each session. Anyhoo, she seems to be getting the verbal cues right about 70-80% of the time. I think this method is working fine for us. But I wanted to see how others do it, just out of curiosity.
