My email conversation with Jason McCartney, its ongoing. Dear - TopicsExpress

My email conversation with Jason McCartney, its ongoing. Dear Jason Thank you for your prompt reply. I feel that you may have misunderstood the intention of my email. I was not complaining about 38 degrees, nor have I ever felt felt bullied by them to take part in any of their campaigns. In the case of TTIP, this is something I have been concerned about for some little time. I have taken the trouble to learn a little about the proposed agreement and have come to the conclusion that it is not in the best interests of the UK. With this in mind I was happy to lend my support to 38 Degrees, and hoped that the meeting between David Babbs and the Parliamentary Business Committee would enable the concerns of many people to be taken into account in the forthcoming discussions. My email to Caroline Dineage was to express a complaint in regards to the rude and aggressive attitude of the committee, and of Mz Dineage, when addressing Mr Babbs. I feel that I made the basis of my complaint clear in my email. I copied my email to 38 Degrees to show support for their efforts, and I copied you as a courtesy, as my Parliamentary representative. As I stated in my email I am very concerned about the implications of TTIP. I am concerned in general about the secrecy surrounding the agreement, and I am also concerned that our laws, standards and protocols could be diluted or even bypassed. It will also be possible for our government to be the subject of legal action by powerful organisations. I hope that the above makes my position clear in this matter. Kind regards, Mike Clayton On 29 Nov 2014, at 18:44, MCCARTNEY, Jason wrote: Dear Mike, Thank you for copying me into your email and I would be grateful if you could send me a copy of the reply you receive please. I hadnt heard about this until it was mentioned by another constituent, but I am pleased that 38 degrees are being held to account. All those who play any role in politics should be up for scrutiny. Some of the facts 38 Degrees send out to their Members contain such one-sided half truths they just damage public debate. I have had a number of complaints from constituents who signed up to one campaign for example to Save Forests and now feel bullied to send emails for every campaign. I have started to reply to 38 degrees campaigns by asking what constituents actually think about an issue - and in many cases they just dont agree with the template email they had initially sent. I think 38 degrees is like the Daily Mail for left wingers, they just stoke emotions based on a partial look at any issue based on prejudice to provoke an angry response. I have little time for 38 degrees and the Daily Mail! Mr Babbs was patronised and treated with utter contempt by the Committee. He was informed very rudely,..... you are here to be challenged.... we will ask the questions. This seems to show clearly the attitude of the Committee. It sounds more like a transcript from a wartime interrogation than a constructive meeting to discuss the concerns of 38 Degree members. You yourself went so far as to criticise Mr Dabbs for encouraging your members, you also implied that 38 Degrees didnt have the expertise to criticise TTIP, or raise any concerns. What an absolute nerve you and your committee have. Do you think that you are the only ones that have the ability to carry out research? Do you think that only MPs should be allowed to discuss matters that will affect us all? Of course there are some difficulties involved in researching a subject when it is surrounded by secrecy. Even the MEPs involved in discussing TTIP wont know the contents until discussions with the U.S. commence, due to the extreme level of secrecy involved. I and many other people, including the members of 38 Degrees, have a great many concerns about the implications of TTIP being introduced. Not least that the Government could be sued by powerful American corporations. There are also concerns that our hard-won safety, employment, food and other standards and regulations could be watered down, or bypassed. To summarise, thanks to the proposed deals Investor State Dispute Settlement, companies will be able to sue governments whose regulations put future profits at risk. This should give cause for concern to anyone who values our existing laws, rules and regulations, many of which set an example to the rest of the world.
