My estimate is that I saw 100 abandoned vehicles along my 5-mile trip home from TWC this morning. A large part of the problem is that Atlanta is so hilly that about every quarter mile stretch had some kind of up or down slope. With everybody trying to get home during the midst of the heaviest snowfall, the snow quickly got packed down into a sheet of ice under the tires, and then cars started getting stuck and having accidents in the bumper-to-bumper rush hour-like traffice (that started about 1PM and lasted into the wee hours of the morning - longer on I-75 north of the city). So the accidents became roadblocks, people ran out of gas, etc. Some commutes by TWC employees took 4 to 12 hours, and some people who were at TWC in the late afternoon and evening tired to leave - couldnt get anywhere - came back and stayed overnight.
