My family came here in the early 1800s. Many more people began - TopicsExpress

My family came here in the early 1800s. Many more people began immigrating here in mass from Europe and China all through the mid to late 1800s. The flow of immigrants really became heavy in the early 1900s. Each new wave of immigrants were met with distrust and contemt by those who came earlier. As one group began to successfully integrate into the american way and became more prosperous, a new group of bottom of the barrel people were needed to fill the jobs and functions in society that better established groups no longer wanted or needed to have. As long as the republic was expanding and growing, there was a demand for more and more people. With each new wave, there was the paranoia that the new dregs coming to these shores were to surely mean the distruction of america. But each new group that came here, eventually assimilated and added to the culture. People still migrate here. And those groups who were once discriminated against, are now also suspicious of the newer imigrants, and believe it will be the down fall of this country. Guess what.....that downfall that everyone has been saying would come, never has. In fact, with each new wave of new peoples coming here, america has grown even stronger than before. We stopped land expansion more than 100 years ago and yet people kept coming. In spite of that, we have grown to become the most powerful country in the history of the world. This is not just my opinion, it is fact.
