My father could neither read nor write but when he retired from RJReynolds in the 1970s he was making the equivalent of $75,000 (2014 dollars) a year. Back then a person with only a high school diploma (or none as in his case) could find a good manufacturing job. Have a nice home and uplift your family. Starting with Reagan in the 1980s, The 1% destroyed the middle class with the help of years and years of bad economic policy (from both corporate friendly democrats and republicans). Now a high diploma will get you a low-wage job at Walmart or Taco Bell, with a one-way ticket to food stamps, bad nutrition, obesity, failing test scores and crappy teeth. Welcome to the United States of America, the new Third World. salon/2013/09/20/rip_the_middle_class_1946_2013/
